MLS Cup 2009, the 14th edition of Major League Soccer's championship match, was played between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake to decide the champion of the 2009 season. The final was played at Qwest Field in Seattle on November 22, 2009. Salt Lake won the game 5â€"4 in a penalty shootout following a 1â€"1 draw. A penalty miss in the shoot-out from Los Angeles striker Edson Buddle left Salt Lake defender Robbie Russell to score and give the club their first title in only their fifth season. It was the second MLS Cup to match two Western Conference teams against each other. The crowd of 46,011 was the largest since the 2002 MLS Cup, when 61,316 witnessed the title game at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts. 2009 marked Galaxy's 6th appearance in an MLS final; the most out of any other club in the league and extended to 9 in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

ESPN televised the match in English and Galavisión in Spanish. This was the first time that the MLS championship match was televised on the cable network after the first thirteen were carried on ABC. GolTV Canada showed the game in Canada
