The Twin Cities have three rapid transit lines:

  • Blue Line (light rail): Mall of America-Minneapolis (Target Field Station)
  • Green Line (light rail): Minneapolis (Target Field Station)-St. Paul (Union Depot)
  • Red Line (bus rapid transit): Apple Valley-Mall of America
  • A Line (bus rapid transit): Rosedale-Minneapolis (46th Street Station)

In addition, the Northstar Commuter Rail connects Big Lake with Minneapolis (Target Field Station). There are six rapid transit lines in advanced planning or under construction, they are:

  • Green Line extension: Eden Prairie-Minneapolis (Target Field Station)
  • Blue Line extension: Brooklyn Park-Minneapolis (Target Field Station)
  • Orange Line (bus rapid transit): Burnsville-Minneapolis (5th Street Station)
  • C Line (bus rapid transit): Brooklyn Center-Minneapolis
  • Gold Line (bus rapid transit): St. Paul (Union Depot)- Woodbury or Lake Elmo (Terminus TBD)

The following is a list of bus routes operating in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Routes 1â€"99

Bus routes 1â€"99 are city routes, running in Minneapolis and St. Paul and often to first or second ring suburbs. 1â€"49 are Minneapolis routes, 50â€"59 are arterial limited stop routes, 60â€"89 are St. Paul routes, and 94 is the I-94 Minneapolis-St. Paul express bus.

Routes 100â€"199

Routes 100â€"199 are limited stop and express routes that run within Minneapolis and St. Paul during peak hours. Most are focused on connecting outlying neighborhoods in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, St. Anthony, New Brighton and Columbia Heights to Downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota. Routes 120â€"124 are free University of Minnesota shuttles.

Routes 200â€"299

Routes 200â€"299 are suburban buses that serve the suburbs east of Snelling Avenue and north of I-94. Most run during peak hours only, but local routes tend to offer midday and weekend service.

Routes 300â€"399

Routes 300â€"399 are suburban buses that run south of or adjacent to I-94 and east of the Mississippi river (east of Downtown St. Paul). Currently all routes run during peak hours only.

Routes 400â€"499

Routes 400â€"499 serve Dakota County and Scott County. Many are operated by Minnesota Valley Transit Authority

Routes 500â€"599

Routes 500â€"599 are suburban routes that serve Bloomington, Edina, and Richfield.

Routes 600â€"699

Routes 600â€"699 are suburban routes serving SW Hennepin County and Carver County.

Routes 700â€"799

Routes 700â€"799 are suburban routes serving NW Hennepin County.

Routes 800â€"899

Routes 800â€"899 are suburban routes serving Anoka County and Sherburne County.

Routes 900â€"999

Routes 900â€"999 are special routes that usually only operate a few days a year.
